Marie Stopes Outreach Teams continued to devote efforts to ensure women have access to quality family planning services in hard-to-reach communities. This June, Pwani team conducted family planning outreach activities in Mafia Island where they provided services and SRH education. According to the 2012 Tanzania National Census data, the population of the Mafia district is 46,438, (22,954 male, 23,484 female). Like many other places, Mafia has a high unmet need for family planning, standing at 19%, hence calling for targeted interventions to enable women and girls access the services. Through this activity, the team reached about 2925 women and girls where they were able to produce producing 10,131.58 CYPs. Mafia district is one of the nine districts of Pwani region of Tanzania and can be reached through local boats or private jets. The SRHR education sessions conducted aimed at addressing the contraceptives misconceptions and fears exacerbated by culture and religion. Studies conducted in Pwani suggest the need to increase knowledge on contraception and family planning services access among the community. In the coming months, Marie Stopes will continue to reach marginalized communities in hard-to-reach areas via our high quality, client-centred outreach services through diversified delivery methods.
