The earlier it can be detected the better, but signs and symptoms of cervical cancer can be tough to spot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariestopes.or.tz\/sw\/services\/womens-health\/cervical-cancer-screening\/\">cervical cancer screenings<\/a> (also known as a pap smear) is crucial for the early detection of abnormalities that lead to cancer. Read on to learn about the symptoms of cervical cancer, and what you can do to prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the symptoms of cervical cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, cervical cancer doesn\u2019t have any symptoms at all in the early stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it can cause:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bleeding during or after sex, or in between your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariestopes.or.tz\/sw\/services\/womens-health\/menstruation-2\/\">hedhi<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain during or after sex<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes to your vaginal discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain in your lower back or pelvis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases these symptoms only develop once the cancer is more advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having these symptoms does not mean you have cervical cancer. There are many other more likely causes, including&nbsp;having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariestopes.or.tz\/sw\/services\/sexual-and-reproductive-health-services\/hiv-sti-screening\/\">sexually transmitted infection<\/a> (STI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re experiencing any of these symptoms it&#8217;s best to get checked out. It\u2019s frequently passed on during foreplay or sex. It doesn\u2019t cause any symptoms and most infections go away without causing any problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if the infection doesn\u2019t go away, it can start to change the skin cells that cover your cervix (the opening to your womb). Over time, that can lead to cervical cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to avoid HPV infection because these viruses are very common and easily transmitted.&nbsp;In fact, it&#8217;s so common that most women get a HPV infection shortly after they first have sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the HPV vaccination helps prevent cervical cancer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are more than 100 different types of HPV, but only a few increase your risk of getting cervical cancer. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariestopes.or.tz\/sw\/services\/sexual-and-reproductive-health-services\/hpv-vaccinations\/\">Chanjo ya HPV<\/a> aims to prevent you from catching these high-risk types of HPV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because HPV is so common, it\u2019s best to have the vaccination very early, before you have had any sexual experience. Depending on your age and the type of screening you have, you\u2019ll need your next one within three to five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During your cervical cancer screening, a sample of cells from your cervix will be taken. These cells then get sent to a lab and checked for changes that happen before you develop cervical cancer. Sometimes the cells are also tested for HPV first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll usually receive your results 2-3 weeks later. If you\u2019re wearing a skirt or dress, you may be able to just lift it up and remove your underwear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, you&#8217;ll lie down on your back on the bed, and cover yourself with a sheet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll be asked to move your legs so that you have your feet together and your knees apart.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your provider will insert a smooth, lubricated, tube-shaped tool called a speculum, into your vagina.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The speculum will be gently opened so your cervix can be seen more easily.
