Post-abortion care

Helping to reduce the risk of complications from a spontaneous miscarriage or an incomplete abortion

What is post-abortion care?

Ensuring your health after a spontaneous miscarriage or incomplete abortion.

Post-abortion care involves a small medical or surgical procedure to ensure that the womb is completely empty. It may also involve treating an infection or injury, depending on the situation.

Importantly, we also offer counselling to help identify and respond to your emotional and physical well-being. It's our duty to ensure we provide the best help possible to our clients.

Alongside post-abortion care, we also offer post treatment appointments where you can discuss your contraception options with our team.

What to expect after an incomplete abortion

Although there is usually a little pain and bleeding, recovery after an incomplete abortion happens quickly for most women.

Along with the physical symptoms of post-abortion, you may also have emotional feelings, such as feeling sad or guilty. This is generally normal, but it's recommended that you speak with someone or schedule a post-abortion counseling appointment with our team.

If any concerns or questions arise, please get in touch with our friendly call centre staff at any time for a private chat. We are here to help.

What to expect following post-abortion care treatment

  • You may have symptoms of nausea, vomiting and tiredness for a few days immediately after the treatment. This is normal. Tender breasts may take a week to 10 days to disappear. You may feel more comfortable if you wear a supportive bra and apply cold ice packs to your breasts. Take painkillers, if necessary, for the pain.
  • Your next menstrual period will begin 4-6 weeks after your treatment. If you have not had a period 6 weeks after your treatment, you should take a pregnancy test. If it is positive, we recommend contacting our team immediately. It's important to remember that any bleeding immediately after your treatment is not a period.
  • We recommend a couple of days of rest after the post abortion care treatment but, generally, most women will be physically fit and well enough to return to normal activities within a day or two’’.

If you have any concerns or would like to discuss your contraception options following treatment, please get in touch with our friendly team.
