Circumcision
A procedure to remove the foreskin of the penis.
Circumcision is a procedure in which the foreskin that covers the tip of the penis is surgically removed. We provide the procedure to male babies, children and adults.
Male circumcision can help prevent disease and has been shown to partially protect against transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. It also helps to lower the risk of cervical cancer in female sex partners.

What to expect from a circumcision
When circumcision is performed by professionals like Marie Stopes Tanzania, it is very safe and quick.
Before you have the procedure, you will have a consultation with one of our doctors – this might be over the phone or face-to-face at a clinic.
The circumcision procedure will take place in one of our clinics. We will start by cleaning the penis and the surrounding areas, and then we will give you pain relief to numb the area – a local anaesthetic for infants or a stronger anaesthetic for adult men.
The foreskin will then be removed – the entire procedure only takes around 15 minutes and most people recover without any problems.
Frequently asked questions about circumcision
It will take around 7-10 days for your penis to heal completely after circumcision. During this time the ring device applied during the procedure should fall off.
You may experience some discomfort and the tip of your penis may be sore. It’s normal for the penis to have some temporary crusting and to look swollen for up to 3 days after surgery.
If you are having any symptoms that you’re worried about, call us toll free on 0800 753 333.
If you’re an adult male who’s just had a circumcision you should take things slowly. Avoid anything that could interrupt healing, such as wearing tight underwear and doing exercise such as long walks and bike riding.
You should seek medical attention if:
– You have bleeding or difficulty in passing urine 8 hours after the procedure
– Your redness and swelling does not improve by the 4th day, or gets worse
– You have a high fever of 38 degrees
If you have any questions about aftercare, please contact us.
Most babies recover from circumcision without any problems and any issues are small, such as bruising, bleeding and infection. It’s important to keep an eye on your baby son’s health and contact us if you’re worried about any symptoms.
After the circumcision your baby may experience some discomfort and the tip of his penis may be sore. It’s normal for the penis to look swollen for up to 3 days after surgery. Help your baby stay comfortable by fastening their diapers loosely and dressing them in loose-fitting clothes.
Your baby should recover quickly without any problems. But contact us if:
– Your baby’s wound does not stop bleeding.
– Your baby doesn’t wee within 8 hours of the circumcision.
– Your baby has a temperature of 38 degrees celsius or more.
– You see signs of infection, such as pus or a smelly discharge coming from the wound, or it hasn’t healed after a week.
