Laboratory tests are investigations that help you understand the cause of a disease, as well as how to monitor and treat it.

Lab tests can also help you assess if treatments are working or failing and help you monitor any side effects.

During a lab test, the procedure we follow may change depending on what test is being done.

Once your lab test has been completed, one of our doctors will give you your results and advise you on treatment.

Common lab tests we do

The common lab tests we provide include:

  • Blood test – this involves taking a blood sample from your vein. These tests can be used to check blood count, blood chemistry and liver function.
  • Urine test – you will be asked to collect your urine (pee) in a container. These tests can be used to check things like protein, sugar, certain types of bacteria, and pregnancy
  • Stool test – you will be asked to collect your stool (poo) sample in a container. These tests can be used to identify intestinal parasites or other micro-organisms.
  • Culture test – blood, urine and stool specimens can be cultured to identify micro-organisms and help determine more effective treatments.

Frequently asked questions about lab tests

Many illnesses can be investigated through lab tests, and what happens during this service will depend on what lab test is being done.

Here are some of the procedures for common tests we provide:

Blood test: This involves taking a blood sample from your vein. The nurse will put a tourniquet on the arm and clean the site with an antiseptic. Using sterile blood collection kits, we’ll draw your blood and process it for various tests.

Urine test: We will ask you to collect your urine (pee) in a container. We’ll then process it, checking for things like protein, sugar, certain types of bacteria, and pregnancy.

Stool test: We will ask you to collect your stool (poo) sample in a container. We’ll check the sample for things like intestinal parasites or other micro-organisms.

Culture test: For this type of test we may collect blood, urine and stool samples. We will process these samples adding substances that help any micro-organisms present to grow. Doing this will help us identify these micro-organisms so we can determine more effective treatments.

Once your lab test has been completed, you’ll be seen by a doctor who will give you your results and advise you on treatment. If you still have further questions or concerns, please contact us.
